Cannabis and Exercise: Can THC Enhance Your Workout?

April 2, 2025 7 min readBy Moss Holm Team

A growing number of athletes and fitness enthusiasts use cannabis before or after workouts. This article explores the evidence, best practices, and potential benefits of combining THC and exercise.

The image of the lazy stoner on the couch is outdated. A growing body of evidence — and a large community of athletes — suggests that cannabis and exercise can complement each other in surprising ways.

What the research says

A 2019 study from the University of Colorado Boulder found that 80% of cannabis users who consumed before or after exercise said it enhanced their enjoyment of physical activity, 70% said it increased motivation, and 52% said it aided recovery.

A separate study found that cannabis users actually exercised more minutes per week on average than non-users — challenging the lazy stoner stereotype directly.

THC before exercise

Low-dose THC (5-15mg) before exercise can increase body awareness, reduce performance anxiety, and make repetitive activities (running, cycling, swimming) feel more engaging. Some runners describe a synergy between a mild THC buzz and "runner's high" — which makes physiological sense, since runner's high is mediated by the endocannabinoid system.

Important caveats: THC impairs coordination and reaction time, so it is not appropriate for activities requiring sharp reflexes, balance, or spatial judgment. Weightlifting with heavy loads, mountain biking, or competitive sports while impaired is not advisable. Stick to low-intensity, repetitive activities where mild impairment does not create safety risks.

THC after exercise for recovery

THC has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that can aid post-workout recovery. Many athletes use a moderate edible dose (10-20mg) after intense training to reduce soreness, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality — all of which support the recovery process.

The anti-inflammatory effects of THC work through the endocannabinoid system, which plays a direct role in the body's inflammatory response. A well-timed post-workout edible may help your body recover faster and more comfortably.

Practical advice

If you want to try cannabis with exercise, start with a very low dose (5-10mg) and choose a safe, low-intensity activity — a gentle jog, yoga, or a long walk. Hydrate more than usual. Never combine cannabis with driving to or from a workout. And listen to your body: if something feels off, stop.
